Open Load Detection
In order to detect an open load condition, each output
is equipped with a pull-down current source of typi-
cally 60µA, whose activation/deactivation may be con-
trolled with the PDEx fl ag in SPI register 0101
lows:
PDEx=0
source,
PDEx=1
source.
If there is no load connected between the output and
the battery supply, the pull-down source will tie the
Output Clamping
All driver outputs provide a clamping functionality for
inductive loads, which turns on the power transistor as
soon as the output voltage of the related channel ex-
ceeds a certain voltage level. There is a fi xed clamping
Table 2. Output Clamping
Note: Although the output drivers provide a clamping functionality for inductive loads, an external free wheeling diode to bat-
tery voltage level is recommended when using PWM modes with inductive load components in order to reduce power dissipation
of the IC. In this case the external clamping level must be lower than the internal clamping level under all supply voltage condi-
tions.
