Error Messages
This section is useful in resolving any problems that may arise when executing ISP
operations using the Atmel-ISP software. Messages generated on-screen are further
classified into error messages, warning messages and notices.
Failed to Save Chain File
The software was unable to write the .chn file to disk. Possible reasons for this error are:

Chain file has wrong number of devices
The number of devices in your chain does not match the number of devices the ISP soft-
ware detected in your JTAG hardware chain. Edit the open chain file using the Delete or
Add Device command or create a new one to make sure the device number matches.
Conflicting Instructions in Chain File
This error is generated when you have two or more different ISP instructions (except
Bypass) in your multi-device chain. For example, if you have a 2-device chain, and
you’re trying to program the first part while verifying the second. The workaround for this
error is described in the following paragraphs.
In the previous example, create a chain file that programs the first device while putting
the second into Bypass. Then create a new chain file that puts the first device into
Bypass while verifying the second device. This process can be repeated in a similar
manner for larger device chains.
If you are trying to program the above chain using an ATE tester, you can create the first
chain file and generate the SVF file. At the prompt “Close SVF and Start Another”, select
No and create the second chain file. Select SVF output format to create the SVF and
now select Yes at the “Close SVF and Start Another” prompt. The contents of the SVF
file for the second chain file will be appended to the first. After you exit the software, one
SVF file that executes both chains will be saved. The same process could be repeated
for larger JTAG chains.
The file is a read-only file.
The file directory to be written to does not exist or cannot be accessed.
An operating system or hardware error. For example, no floppy disk in drive.
