We live in a world in which more
and more items of electric and
electronic equipment are working
closer together – with the result
that they are increasingly likely to
disturb one another. The remedy is
called electromagnetic compatibility
(EMC), and now there is no getting
round it. The EMC act passed in
1996 applies to all equipment and
systems in the EU, even those of an
earlier date. Which means they may
have to be upgraded, with inter-
ference-suppression components
based on ferrite cores.
Ring and DE cores damp interference
over a wide range of frequencies,
for example in current-compensated
chokes for signal and data lines in
telecommunications, consumer
electronics, automotive electronics
and automation technology.
D core chokes can be used to
suppress conducted interference
in switch-mode power supplies,
and large toroids solve the same
problem in inverter filters for IGBT-
switched and uninterruptible
power supplies.
