ALM Operating Modes

This feature, called register packing, improves device utilization by allowing the
device to use the register and combinational logic for unrelated functions. Another
mechanism to improve fitting is to allow the register output to feed back into the LUT
of the same ALM so that the register is packed with its own fan-out LUT. The ALM
can also drive out registered and unregistered versions of the LUT or adder output.
The Quartus
performance.
The Arria II GX ALM can operate in any of the following modes:
The Quartus II software and supported third-party synthesis tools, in conjunction
with parameterized functions such as the library of parameterized modules (LPM)
functions, automatically choose the appropriate mode for common functions such as
counters, adders, subtractors, and arithmetic functions.
Normal Mode
Normal mode is suitable for general logic applications and combinational functions.
In this mode, up to eight data inputs from the LAB local interconnect are inputs to the
combinational logic. Normal mode allows two functions to be implemented in one
Arria II GX ALM, or an ALM to implement a single function of up to six inputs. The
ALM can support certain combinations of completely independent functions and
various combinations of functions that have common inputs.
The Quartus II Compiler automatically searches for functions of common inputs or
completely independent functions to be placed into one ALM and to make efficient
use of the device resources.
Extended LUT Mode
Use extended LUT mode to implement a specific set of seven-input functions. The set
must be a 2-to-1 multiplexer fed by two arbitrary five-input functions sharing four
inputs.
extended LUT mode. In this mode, if the seven-input function is unregistered, the
unused eighth input is available for register packing.
Functions that fit into the template shown in
“if-else” statements in Verilog HDL or VHDL code.
