The following example is intended to explain these:
Notation

Explanation
Normally closed contacts are represented by NC, normally open contacts
with NO. The number defines how many contacts are available. The
symbol after the NC defines that normally closed contact is a positively
driven contact. This switch therefore has one normally closed contact
and one normally open contact; the normally closed contact is a positively
driven contact.
