6. Interrupt Controller
An interrupt is a process by which a program is informed that an event has occurred in the
system (for example, an interrupt signal is asserted to indicate an error). When a program
receives an interrupt, it temporarily suspends normal processing and diverts the execution of
instructions to a sub-routine handled by an interrupt controller. The controller communicates
with the host processor and the device that initiated the interrupt to determine how to handle
the interrupt.
Interrupt events originate from a variety of sources; however, they can be classified as one of
two types: hardware and software interrupts. Interrupts generated by devices (for example, a
printer) indicate an event has occurred and are called hardware interrupts. Interrupt events
generated by software programs are called software interrupts.
