Ethernet TCP/IP network performance
To evaluate the bandwidth used by the Global Data service, it is necessary to have a list of
the variables belonging to the same multicast group, and their parameters:
1
2
3
These parameters must be collected at each station publishing at least one variable in the
multicast group.
The Global Data service network load in bps can be evaluated using the following formula:
(Size of variable x 2 + 90) x (1000/(period of Mast task x distribution period))
This calculation must be performed for variables in the multicast groups.
The previous evaluations give indications of traffic when considering:
b
b
The final objective is to obtain an evaluation of the traffic when connecting several stations.
The following information is required for each station:
b
Data services), calculated previously
b
Additional information is required for Global Data traffic:
b
b
The first step in evaluating the system consists of calculating the traffic in each
collision domain. A collision domain is a domain where a hub (concentrator)
is used.
A hub can be used to separate two domains. If only a switched or daisy-chained
network infrastructure is used (it is strongly recommended to limit the network load
as much as possible), go directly to the next step.
If you are using hubs, calculate the total traffic for all the stations connected to the
same collision domain. The table below makes this calculation easier.
Messages sent per
second to
Total number of messages
transmitted per station
The second step consists of evaluating the traffic between the collision domains. If
only a switched or daisy-chained network infrastructure is used (avoid using 2 hubs),
it is only necessary to add the messages transmitted on each link. If hubs are used at
another place in the application, add only the traffic from one hub domain to the other
(for example, via a switch) during this step.
