10.11.6 Example: STM-1 Mode, 1+1 APS Protection
Figure 32
shows an example of a 1+1 APS protection architecture in STM-1/OC-3 mode using
two PHAST-12N devices. One PHAST-12N device handles up to four Worker lines (W) while
a second PHAST-12N handles the associated Protection lines (P). Both devices are
interconnected through the APS Port interface, using one fourth of the bandwidth per STM-1/
OC-3 protection group. The cross connects of both devices setup permanent bridges from the
Worker Transmit lines to their Protection Transmit lines over one of the APS Port interfaces.
The received protection payload of the four lines is available on the other APS Port interface.

When the APS FSM detects a failure of one of the Worker lines, e.g., line #2 in
Figure
33, the
cross connect of the Worker PHAST-12N performs the protection switch. It connects the
receive protected traffic of the failed line to the payload of its associated received Protection
line available at the Receive APS Port interface.
