The CX29600 HPI provides primitives to retrieve section, line, and path counter
values. The HPI performs all necessary register operations to retrieve the
complete counter values, not just the high, medium, or low register byte value.
On some system architectures the operation of reading across buses can be slow.
This can affect the performance of other devices on the system.
devices, the CX29600 HPI can be compiled with a software mirror that is used to
store the values of those CX29600 registers which do not change under normal
conditions. Having a local copy of the register value reduces the expensive bus
read operations. Those device registers that may change during normal operations
(i.e., counters and status registers are not mirrored and therefore have to be read
