The transitions indicated in the state diagram are defined as follows:
INC_IND/DEC_IND: Offset adjustment (increment or decrement indication)
3 x EQ_NEW_POINT: 3 consecutive equal NEW_POINT indications
NDF_ENABLE: Single NDF_ENABLE indication
3 x AIS_IND: 3 consecutive AIS indications
8 x INV_POINT: Eight consecutive INV_POINT indications
8 x NDF_ENABLE: Eight consecutive NDF_ENABLE indications

The pointer interpreter state machine detects path loss of pointer (LOP-P) defect and path alarm
indication signal (AIS-P) defect. A LOP-P defect is declared when the pointer state machine
enters the LOP_state and a LOP-P defect is removed when it exits the LOP_state. An AIS-P
defect is declared when the pointer state machine enters the AIS_state and an AIS-P defect is
removed when it exits the AIS_state.
Concatenation Pointer Interpreter State Machine
The function of the concatenation pointer interpreter is to extract and validate the concatenation
pointer from the H1/H2 bytes. The concatenation pointer interpreter is a time-multiplexed finite
state machine that can process any legal mix of STS-3c/12c (AU4/4-4c) concatenation pointers.
Disabled NDF is defined as the following bit patterns: 0110, 1110, 0010, 0100 and 0111.
The remaining 6 NDF bit patterns (0000, 0011, 0101, 1010, 1100, 1111) result in an INV_POINT
indication.
The ss bits are unspecified in SONET and have bit pattern 10 in SDH.
The use of ss bits in definition of indications may be optionally disabled with the SSEN register bit.
The requirement for previous NDF_ENABLE, INC_IND, or DEC_IND to be more than 3 frames ago
may be optionally disabled with the JUST3DIS register bit.
NEW_POINT is also an INV_POINT.
The requirement for the pointer to be within the range of 0 to 782 in 8 X NDF_ENABLE may be
optionally disabled.
The transition from NORM_state to NORM_state does not represent state changes but imply offset
changes.
3 x EQ_NEW_POINT takes precedence over other events and may optionally reset the INV_POINT
count.
All 3 offset values received in 3 x EQ_NEW_POINT must be identical.
"Consecutive event counters" are reset to zero on a change of state (except the INV_POINT counter).
INV_POINT counter can be reset after 3 EQ_NEW_POINT optionally with the INVCNT register bit.
INC_IND or DEC_IND may not reset the EQ_NEW_POINT counter.
The number of “consecutive AIS indications” required to transition to the AIS state is programmable
with the RELAYAIS register bit. (1 or 3)
