15.1.1 Installing MPLAB IDE 8.xx (Optional)
Installing MPLAB IDE is relatively straightforward as long as you know what you’re doing to begin with. This is the
problem with many IDEs and installation programs; you have to install the tool to figure out what not to do and then in
many cases un-install the tool then re-install it. To save you all this grief, we are going to install the tool together step by
step with a complete set of screen shots of each step along with explanations. Thus, without further ado, let’s get this
done. The first step is to locate and launch the MPLAB IDE 8.xx installer. The file is located on the DVD here:
At this point, please launch the MPLAB IDE installation program. You should see the initial splash screen as show in
Figure 15.2.
integrated and called from MPLAB directly. The student version is FREE with the following limitations – first 60 days
are fully-featured, after 60 days only optimization level 1 can be enabled in the compiler. Currently the PIC24 C
compiler is being ported to both Linux and Mac OS!
MPLAB IDE 8.xx and PIC24 C compiler are located on the DVD-ROM at these locations:
DVD-ROM:\ CHAM_PIC \ TOOLS \ PIC \ MPLAB_IDE_8_40 \ setup.exe
DVD-ROM:\ CHAM_PIC \ TOOLS \ PIC \ PICkit 2 v2.61.00 Setup A \ setup.exe
DVD-ROM:\ CHAM_PIC \ TOOLS \ PIC \ MPLAB_IDE_8_40 \ setup.exe
NOTE
TIP
You can always download the latest copy of the install from Microchip directly;
however, small changes in the installation and setup may de-synchronize what you see
here in these page, thus, let’s just use the same installation packages on the DVD. You
can always update later after you have installed the complete tool chain and have it
working.
PICkit 2 (PIC ISP) is simply a piece of hardware and Windows will detect it and install
the drivers from the MPLAB IDE install. However there is an additional stand alone GUI
software program that we will cover the installation of shortly. The nice thing about this
stand alone programmer software is that you can load pre-compiled hex files without
starting up MPLAB.
